James Brown’s wife asked the Bureau to step in after his 6-year arrest for assault and evading the police. Decades ago, Communist leanings were one of the most common ways to get put under FBI surveillance. That’s what happened to celebrities such as John Lennon, Charlie Chaplin, and Lucile Ball. The list even includes Walt Disney, who was an alleged informant and friend of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. Taking a public stand against the Vietnam war was another no-no. It got John Denver and The Monkees in trouble with the Bureau. Partying and drug use could also make the FBI suspicious. They suspected Jerry Garcia was connected to LSD suppliers but had no proof. Supporting the Civil Rights movement and allegedly militant groups got Aretha Franklin a lengthy file and a long period of FBI surveillance. It wasn’t dropped until after informants proved she was never connected to any militant groups and the suspicion lead to death threats.
There are also a few unique cases where the FBI puts a celebrity under surveillance to protect them. Whitney Houston was involved in an extortion case and sent threatening letters by an obsessed fan. The Bureau helped solve both issues. They watched Princess Diana during her marriage to Prince Charles and her visit to America in 1989. They were looking for any potential threats and were able to block them (at the time).
