There were plenty of eventually successful musicians who had a period where no one was listening. Jewel lived out of her car before signing her first contract. Kelly Clarkson did the same thing before she became American Idol’s biggest success story. Shania Twain came from a poor family and is now one of the country genre’s best sellers.

A few unfortunate celebrities even faced homelessness twice. Lil Kim lived in a car with her mother as a child and on the streets of Brooklyn as a teen. Tyler Perry moved out of his home at 16 to escape his abusive father and became homeless again at 22.

Tech giants also struggled before they came up with their world-changing inventions. Steve Jobs founded Apple while staying in his friends’ dorm rooms and had to sell soda cans to make ends meet. That wasn’t the strangest way that struggling future celebrities made money while they were homeless. Drew Carey had to sell his plasma for $40, and Sylvester Stalone had to give up his dog for $50.

Celebrities can also get slapped with difficulties and become homeless later in their career. Lana Wood couldn’t afford her daughter’s expensive medical treatments and needed help from fans. Troy Donahue’s short life was full of ups and downs, including a period of homelessness. The Godfather Part II put him back on track until his sudden death.
