Raymond’s mother Marie became a fan favorite thanks to the mixture of love and obsessive control that Doris Roberts brought to the role. Peter Boyle used his life experience and varied career to portray Frank, his cranky but caring father. Some cast members migrated over from other sitcoms, including Jean Stapleton from All in the Family and Georgia Engel from The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Some cast members had experience playing the type of characters they portrayed. Katherine Helmond was used to being a high-society lady. Fred Willard had been a funny TV dad more than once. That experience showed in their work.

Other members of the cast were literally part of the family. Series creator Phil Rosenthal brought his father Max on for several episodes. Ray also brought in his relatives, and his father Albert even helped inspire the series with his real-life antics. The most difficult loss was of one of the children. Sawyer Sweeten, one of the twins, started acting before he could walk. He tragically took his own life before reaching 20.
