The Godfather and its two sequels are widely regarded as being among the greatest movies of all time. The first groundbreaking crime drama film, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and co-written by Mario Puzo, was nominated for eleven Academy Awards. Of those nominations, The Godfather took home wins for Best Picture, Best Actor for Marlon Brando's unforgettable performance, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
The film's 1974 sequel The Godfather: Part II, scored yet another eleven Oscar nods and ended up with six wins including for Best Director and Best Picture. Although the third installment in the trilogy The Godfather: Part III is considered to be the weakest of the three, it still managed to nab an additional seven Oscar nominations.
Apart from impeccable writing and direction on Coppola and Puzo's part, what made this trio of films the classics that they remain to this day was the world-class cast of actors and actresses that breathed life into Puzo's dynamic and nuanced characters.
