Wonder Woman has been an icon for women everywhere for almost a century. And it’s not surprising to see why. This DC Comic-created Amazonian princess hails from a mysterious island nation. There, she was known as Diana de Temiscira or Princess Diana of Themyscira—though, in regular society, she goes by the name Diana Prince. She has superhuman strength, unbeatable combat skills, a leather Lasso of Truth, indestructible bracelets, and a weaponized tiara.
What girl or woman wouldn’t want all of those accouterments or that exotic backstory? If you’re a Wonder Woman superfan, you probably already know who the first actress who played this iconic comic character is. But if you’re not, you’d probably guess it was Lynda Carter. And indeed, she is the most legendary among the WW actresses, having played the heroine on TV for a decade, spanning the 1970s and the 1980s. But in fact, representations of Wonder Woman in TV and film date as far back as the late 1960s.
Back in 1967, Ellie Wood Walker and Linda Harrison depicted Diana Prince and Wonder Woman, respectively, in a pilot TV series that failed to get off the ground. So arguably, they were the first-ever live-action versions of our heroine of the hour. But their fame was quickly eclipsed by voice-over and TV and film actresses of the 1960s through the 1980s, stars like Cathy Lee Crosby, Shannon Farnon, and Jane Webb. Even the short-lived voice rolls of B.J. Ward Connie Caulfield gets a mention in the Wonder Woman fandom. And, of course, in recent times, we have Megan Gale (well, sort of), Adrienne Palicki, and the unmatched Gal Gadot to fawn over.
