The star that arguably received the most torturous on-set injuries during The Wizard of Oz’s filming was Margaret Hamilton, who played the Wicked Witch of the East. Not only was Margaret covered with severe burns as a result of a relatively innocuous scene early on in the film’s production, but she realized after production of the movie was finished that the toxic makeup that she had worn during filming could have easily killed her. Prior to filming, the actor who had originally been cast in the role of the Tin Man had similar makeup issues. That actor was Buddy Ebsen, who was replaced in the role of the Tin Man by Jack Haley after his subsequent hospitalization made him unable to perform.
