During the recording of the 1970s Let It Be, the Beatles were ready to break up. The band had been a thing since 1960, even if it didn’t find its breakout success until the middle of the decade. After several years at the top of their game, the four members of the band could barely stand to be around each other. Things got so bad that George Harrison actually walked out on the group while Let It Be was being recorded.
After George Harrison walked out of the studio, he didn’t come back for around a week. During this time period, the remaining members of the Beatles were tasked with trying to figure out how they were going to finish the recording of their final album. John Lennon suggested that the group ask Eric Clapton to come to be George’s replacement. John was already trying to get Eric to perform in his solo band, the Plastic Ono Band, and Eric and the group got along well.
Thankfully, George Harrison ended up returning to the studio so that he could finish the recording of Let It Be. Even if George hadn’t come back, Eric Clapton has claimed in the years since that there was no way he would’ve taken the lead guitarist’s role in the Beatles.
