Edie McClurg got her start in radio before making her film debut around the age of 30. Edie’s first role on the big screen came via Brian De Palma’s Carrie, though her most iconic role remains the one she portrayed a decade later in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Following that 1986 classic, Edie continued working with writer and director John Hughes in such classics as Planes, Trains & Automobiles, and Curly Sue. Edie continued performing over the next several decades. Into the 2000s, Edie became better known for her voiceover performances than her live-action roles.

In 2019, Edie’s career seemingly came to an end when it was announced that the actress was suffering from dementia. This announcement came alongside the news that her family was filing for a conservatorship in order to protect the demented actress from a strange new man that had recently shown up in her life. This man was Michael L. Ramos. Though Edie’s family was granted the conservatorship, the judge decreed that Michael could continue living with Edie for the time being. This has all changed now, however, as a restraining order was recently granted against the man after Edie’s family went to court and suggested that he may have been abusing the actress.
