The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, premiered on October 1, 1962 and ran for almost three full decades before ending on May 22, 1922. Throughout its time on the airwaves, the show became something of a cultural institution. While the show was historic, it was also pretty controversial. From Carson's off-color jokes to his tumultuous personal life, there were many reasons why Carson often found his name in the gossip rags of his day.
Carson was no saint, but the kinds of things that people found controversial about him back then would hardly raise eyebrows in the modern world. That being said, he still managed to get a rise out of people when he was on the air Carson would often make jokes at the expense of other stars. And at times, his sense of humor would even make him a few enemies.
Carson's co-host, Ed McMahon was by his side for his entire tenure on late-night television. Every night, he would introduce him with his signature line 'Heeere's Johnny!'. No one knew the charismatic talk show host better than he did. Not long before his passing in 2009, Ed published his revealing tell-all book 'Here's Johnny' in 2005.
