A passenger was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle gold bars in his shoes through an airport in India.
The suspect, not named by officials, arrived on Emirates flight EK-528 from Dubai and was detained by police at the international arrival hall of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad on August 10.
Authorities said they were acting on a tip-off that the passenger was carrying 10 million INR (93,200 GBP) worth of the precious metal, dubbed the "barbarous relic" by economist John Maynard Keynes, who believed gold had limited uses.
Security officers pulled the passenger aside for a thorough scan and found two 'battery-shaped' gold bars hidden in his bag and left shoe. They also confiscated a yellow-coloured silver chain.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence said: "The recovered metal was found to be gold weighing 1,390 grams worth about 1 crore (10 million INR). It was seized under the Customs Act."
