On August 17, 2024, dozens of unpermitted climbers narrowly escaped danger when the Dukono Volcano in Halmahera, Indonesia, erupted as they reached its rim.
Surreal drone footage from the incident shows the group scrambling for cover as the volcano suddenly erupted, sending ash and debris into the air. The climbers, who had ventured to the volcano without proper authorization, put their lives at risk during the unexpected eruption.
There were no reported injuries among the climbers.
