Did you know that Andy Griffith was professionally jealous of supporting star Don Knotts during his time on The Andy Griffith Show and that Don later grew jealous of Andy in his personal life? The Andy Griffith Show was a television series that traded on good, old-fashioned values, and a large part of the appeal of the show was how loving the interactions between the characters were. Though there were oftentimes conflicts in the show’s setting of Mayberry, things never got too dark. Sadly, the same can’t be said for the atmosphere behind the scenes of the series. On paper, Andy Griffith and Don Knotts had a staggering amount of things in common. For the most part, they remained the best of friends over the course of their lifetimes. However, there were moments when the two grew incredibly jealous of each other for varying reasons. Some of the things the two had in common include the fact that they were Southerners that grew up in the Great Depression. Other things they had in common included the fact that they were mentally ill alcoholics who loved being unfaithful.

Generally, it’s supporting stars that get jealous of titular stars on television series. However, this wasn’t the case on The Andy Griffith Show. Over the course of the series’ peak years, it was Andy who found himself envious of Don Knotts. Andy played the straight man, while Don was the funny one. Because of this, audiences grew to love Don more. This resulted in Don receiving awards and recognition, as well as an offer to start appearing in pictures on the big screen.

Don Knotts left The Andy Griffith Show to start appearing in films after five seasons of its eight-season run, though Andy had already grown jealous of the performer long before that. Despite these hard feelings, the two remained lifelong friends. Many decades later, it would be Don Knotts that found himself jealous of Andy Griffith because of something in their personal lives.
