If you’re from the US, you probably think of Mr. Wilson’s mischievous neighbor. The little blonde boy never meant to torture anyone, but he always got himself into trouble anyway. If you’re from the UK, the picture might not be as rosy. The country’s Dennis the Menace is a punk who carried weapons and sicked his dog on the softies he hates.
The inspirations for the characters also couldn’t have been more different. Hank Ketcham based the American version on his son’s own misbehavior. George Law based his British version on the mood of the time. Both of them came out in their respective countries on the same day. Claims of plagiarism quickly followed but were shut down by the creators Neither one knew about the other, and they were fine with the shared name.
Both comics went through several changes and eventually became popular enough to start cropping up in other media. The characters appeared in movies, TV shows, and films, both animated and live-action. They also showed up in video games and at theme parks. A name change kept confusion at bay; Dennis in the UK and Dennis the Menace in America.
The legacy of the character still lives on today, whichever version of him you know. His statue stood in a park for years until it was stolen, and Hank was the honorary mayor of the town where his comics were set.
