These scenes may give insights into characters and help flesh them out. Two scenes from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows make the Dursleys seem like humans and not caricatures and bullies. A deleted scene from Aliens explains how Ripley was motivated by her daughter to go on her mission.
Alternate openings are also common. At one point, Iron Man 2 opened with a scene that seemed to show our hero in danger, but it’s nothing more than a hangover. One version of Its first scene showed Pennywise failing to nab its first victim.
A few of them spark hot debates. Does the deleted unicorn scene from Blade Runner mean Decker is a replicant? The filmmaker thought it was at least important enough to bring back for the special edition.
Deleted scenes may also answer questions that fans had. Take the one from Star Wars where Yoda explained why Luke Skywalker didn’t know who his father was earlier. A deleted scene from Mean Girls showing Cady and Regina making up in the bathroom before the Spring Fling dance explains why they didn’t get into any fights afterward.
All of these deleted scenes change how at least part of the film makes us feel. They can be funny, like the falafel hot-dog scene from Anchorman. They might be uncomfortable like the seduction from Lion King. They might let us sit in our emotions like when William plays Stairway to Heaven in Almost Famous. These different emotions are the biggest loss for fans who never got to see the scenes.
