Have you watched Postcards from the Edge or read Debbie Reynolds’ autobiography? They both tell of this beautiful starlet’s struggles to find the right man and create a stable family. Debbie began her life as an ordinary girl from El Paso Texas. She had a wide range of interests and was a bit of a tomboy, but her natural beauty was undeniable. The future starlet took roles in musicals but shot into public consciousness with Singin’ in the Rain. Her costar Gene Kelly pushed everyone beyond their limits, but it helped the musical become a critical darling and enduring classic. She earned plenty of roles after that and became a major name. Her first husband was someone just as well-known; Eddie Fisher.
They seemed like a perfect pair and had 2 children together. That image shattered when he left to comfort and marry Elizabeth Taylor when her husband Mike Todd died. Debbie later married Harry Karl, a shoe magnate with a troubled romantic past. He was a massive gambler who squandered her money and left her with thousands of dollars of debt by the time they were divorced.
Her final marriage was perhaps one of her biggest mistakes. Richard Hamlett seemed like the supportive man she needed, but he also squandered her money after she agreed to invest it in a casino with him. He also made her fear for her life and worry that he’d kill her to get his hands on her large life insurance policy. These struggles also strained her relationship with her daughter Carrie, and they went years without speaking. They eventually made up but tragically died within days of each other.
