Towards the end of his life, Dean Martin’s health began to suffer significantly as a result of many decades worth of chain smoking. According to legend, the entertainer started the habit when he was only 16 years old. By the time he was entering his 60s, this lifetime worth of smoking was starting to have an effect. In his 70s, Dean was diagnosed with cancer. This cancer diagnosis inspired the beloved actor, comedian, and crooner to give up smoking once and for all. Sadly, by this point, it was already too late.
Dean was fine with giving up smoking in an attempt to increase his lifespan, but there was one notable thing that he wasn’t willing to listen to the doctors about. Apparently, doctors advised Dean that his cancer might abate if he underwent surgery on both his kidneys and his liver. For whatever reason, Dean turned the doctors down. This came in spite of the fact that the entertainer had undergone a completely unnecessary elective surgery years previously.
During his 20s, Dean Martin got a nose job gifted to him by none other than fellow comedic performer Lou Costello. Many believe that the reason Dean underwent the surgery was to fix the damage that had been done during his days as an amateur boxer. Before becoming an entertainer, Dean flirted with becoming a famous boxer. He broke his nose many times during these days, though the other person always looked worse! Allegedly, Dean won most of his fights.
Other surprising secrets about Dean Martin include the fact that the entertainer feigned alcoholism in order to be more relatable to the audience. Join Facts Verse as we explore why Dean Martin said NO to life-saving surgery.
