The Tonight Show is the one that started it all. It took the idea of a talk show off the radio and onto the air. It was and remains popular to this day. Its enduring quality is in large part thanks to its hosts. They’ve been at least as much or even more entertaining than the show itself.
Steve Allen was the first. He added most of the core elements such as monologues, music, and on-the-street interviews. His legacy is eternal, but his death was tragic. Jack Parr came next. He was never afraid to go a bit dirty or crazy, even if the network didn’t approve. He’ll always be remembered for the day he did something that no one on any talk show has done on air since.
Johnny Carson’s famous catchphrase was immortalized in Stanly Cubrik’s horror film The Shining. It was a fitting tribute because he was entertaining on camera but his dark side had been growing since childhood. Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien fought over the coveted spot of Tonight Show host. It was a famous feud that has split the world of fans and entertainers. Most are either on Team Jay or Team Conan to this day.
Jimmy Fallon is the most recent host and also the most recent one to show a dark side. He was always funny and likable on camera, but that all changed when they stopped rolling. The crew often saw a completely different side of him when they called cut.
