Danny Trejo didn’t seem to fit that bill when he was young. He was in and out of jail, selling and addicted to drugs. The experience did help cultivate his “tough guy” image. He was a prizewinning boxer with a tattoo that’s still noticeable today. He also got his diploma and made sure he knew everything about everyone.
The specter of death still loomed over him. It took the possibility of death row to make him change. He knelt to pray and asked the Lord to help him through. He did, but in unexpected ways. Many of the wonderful things that happened to him after that happened by accident. He stumbled upon an Alcoholics Anonymous program while looking for a party. He even wandered onto his first film set while helping a friend.
Danny later said that everything positive in his life was the result of helping someone else. He works with charities, speaks to college students, and supports the rights of former inmates. He’s also kept himself busy in other ways. His film career is expansive, and he also owns restaurants. He also has children that he supports even though he had them in his early, wild days. He doesn’t mind being typecast as the tough guy but is working to distance himself from his past in reality.
