But how did his life get started? What was his journey to becoming a huge star and prominent philanthropist?
Danny Thomas was born in Michigan and grew up in Toledo, Ohio. His parents were Lebanese Catholic immigrants, and both his ethnic origins and religious faith played a tremendous influence on his life.
He moved to Chicago as a young man to pursue a career as a radio entertainer and nightclub performer. It wasn’t long until he became a huge star on the radio. He played a variety of characters on different radio comedy programs. Eventually, he was given a chance to star in his own radio show.
But radio wasn’t enough, and he wanted to graduate to the visual medium. In the late 1940s, he began his film career and found a few supporting roles in major Hollywood productions. He eventually became a film star when he played the lead role in the film The Jazz Singer.
But in the middle of his burgeoning film career, he decided he wanted to try something new. He decided to act in television shows, knowing that this was the new medium of the future. He eventually became the star of his own show on TV and had a great career appearing on some of America’s most popular TV shows. He even served as an executive producer for many shows.
He also dedicated his life to philanthropy and began the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 1962. He worked till just two days before he died and was dedicated to entertaining and helping others.
