Climber narrowly avoids falling boulder while 100metres off ground

A lucky climber narrowly avoided tumbling down a cliff face after a huge chunk of rock came loose in his hands.

Guillem Teba Galbis was climbing through the Asturias region of Spain with his friend Victor Sanchez when they found themselves 100 metres off the ground.

Alarming footage shows Victor reaching up to a jagged part of the cliff when it broke loose in his hands as soon as his weight was on it.

The 60cm boulder plummeted to the ground below before smashing into smithereens, while Victor was fortunately caught by his climbing rope.

Guillem, from near Valencia, Spain, said: My reaction was alarming and then calm when I observed that my partner was fine, we did not suffer injuries.

We chose this route because the degree of difficulty motivated us. We certainly didn't know that the rock was loose.

I went through that part first and it didn't break away. Luckily it was Victors turn, because if I had thrown it I would probably now not be here.

We were about 100m above the ground and the route took about four hours to climb.

I have been climbing for 15 years and fortunately this hasnt happened to me before.
