There are many classic films and TV shows turning 50 in 2022. These films and TV shows reflected the general atmosphere of America of their time. What they had in common was how they weren't afraid to be bold with their humor or drama. Even for those that weren't particularly "bold", they were still written for relatively intelligent audiences.
Looking back on these classic films and TV shows, we can clearly see why they’ve remained popular – even 50 years later.
1972 was the year that The Bob Newhart Show premiered. While this was a lighthearted comedy show, it was nevertheless written for sophisticated audiences. The show still holds up today and many fans wish today’s programs could match up to the excellence of the sitcom.
50 years ago, we also got introduced to Fred G. Sanford and his son Lamont. Sanford and Son was one of the funniest sitcoms of the 70s. It was also one of the first sitcoms to give opportunities to black American actors and other minority entertainers.
M*A*S*H was an incredible show that managed to depict the harrowing conditions of the Korean War through a comedic lens. It featured a great ensemble cast and ran for over a decade. Its series finale remains one of the most-watched episodes in American TV history!
Who can forget about Maude? The show was one of the first to have a strong female lead and didn’t shy away from using humor to depict some of the most challenging subjects of the day.
