Chuck was the eldest of three children growing up and took the brunt of his alcoholic father’s abuse. At the age of 10, Chuck’s father abandoned the family, and Chuck’s mother moved them to California. In the wake of his father’s absence, Chuck began to find a much more positive and strong masculine role model via John Wayne’s many acting roles in classic films being aired on television.
It was under the influence of John Wayne and his fervent patriotism that Chuck decided to join the United States Air Force, and it was in the United States Air Force that Chuck began studying martial arts. Initially, Chuck believed that karate could prove beneficial after his service by allowing him to become a police officer. Little did Chuck know that it was going to prove useful in a completely different way.
When Chuck was done serving in the United States Air Force, he didn’t become a police officer. Instead, he opened up his own martial arts studio in California. He trained many stars, including Steve McQueen’s son. This allowed Chuck to meet Steve, and Steve is the one that told Chuck that he had what it took to become a star.
