Charles Bronson was known as one of Hollywood’s most authentic tough guys, and his tough demeanor came as a result of his difficult upbringing. Charles was one of 15 children born to a poor coal miner, and he was forced to work in the coalmines himself starting at a young age. Charles was grateful for the opportunity to leave the coalmines behind for the silver screen. One of Charles’ first big roles was in the Western film The Magnificent Seven, which was released in 1960.
Following Charles’ work in The Magnificent Seven, he became a part of another ensemble cast when he was lined up to appear in the picture The Great Escape. Steve McQueen headed the ensemble cast, which also included James Garner. Charles and James didn’t get along over the course of filming the picture, and their feud during the production resulted in Charles holding a grudge against his fellow actor that lasted until his death.
Over a decade after appearing in The Great Escape, Charles Bronson became a bigger star than ever thanks to his performance in 1974’s Death Wish.
