Epilepsy affected one of the biggest names in the music industry; Prince. Lil Wayne is a staple of the rap scene who revealed his condition in 2013. Behind-the-scenes names also quietly manage it. They include prolific choreographer Bob Fossi and composer George Gerswhin. Trying to hide epilepsy can keep the public unaware. Abbot and Costello worked Bud Abbot’s seizures into their acts to ensure no one knew. The potential causes for the condition are too long to list. Michael Wilding had one suddenly, fell down the stairs, and suffered a fatal head injury. Others have had epilepsy since childhood or after suffering a stroke or getting in an accident.
It can even be the result of unhealthy habits. Truman Capote and Jonathan Davis both began having seizures after years of drug use and alcohol. Most celebrities turn to doctor-recommended methods to manage their epilepsy. Hugo Weaving, Margaux Hemingway, and Pete Duel have all taken anti-convulsants drugs. They also try to avoid triggers such as stress and bright lights.
When epilepsy can’t be managed, it can take lives. Blues singer Jimmy Reed got a misdiagnosis and later died of a seizure. One of the most recent losses was rising Disney Channel star, Cameron Boyce.
Many celebrities with epilepsy have used their platforms to speak out and make the world aware of the condition. Amy Lee of Evanescence started the Out of the Shadows campaign. Rick Harrison of Pawn Stars is working with the Epilepsy Foundation in Nevada. Like and subscribe to Facts Verse for more on the struggles of being famous and having a dangerous condition.
