There is a long-standing precedent of celebrities running for President in the US. Former actor Ronald Reagan became the 40th President of the United States in 1980. On November 16, 2015, Donald J. Trump formally announced that he was running for the office of President of the United States of America. At the time, many people didn’t take his candidacy seriously. After all, this was a man who both had a hit reality show on network television and had made appearances in films such as Home Alone 2 and Zoolander.
Seemingly against all odds, not only did Trump win the GOP nomination, but he went on to clinch victory in the 2016 presidential election thus becoming the 45th President of the United States. Love him or hate him, Trump, like Reagan before him. proved that celebrities shouldn’t just be brushed off as novelty candidates in presidential elections. Just as Arnold Schwarzenegger had done before when he became the Governor of the state of California, Trump showed us that fame and widespread recognition can be used to one's advantage to win over the masses.
