On July 5, 1948, 29-year-old actress Carole Landis was found dead at her home in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Landis' death came as a morbid surprise to all of her fans, friends, family, and colleagues, who likely anticipated that she still had most of her best years ahead of her.
Throughout the 1940s, Landis had worked as a contract player with 20th Century Fox. Her first big breakout role was playing the female lead in the 1940 film One Million B.C. She previously had appeared in a handful of bit parts in other films and had posed for hundreds of pin-up photographs.
After appearing in One Million B.C. which was put out by United Artists, Landis was transformed seemingly overnight into a star. Around this time, she was given the nickname 'The Ping Girl' by a press agent.
Landis enjoyed a fairly prolific acting career throughout the 40s, but by the end of the decade, some of her star power was beginning to dwindle.
After separating from her fifth husband, Broadway producer W. Horace Schmidlapp, Landis began a romantic relationship with actor Rex Harrison. At the time, Rex was married to actress Lilli Palmer. Harrison and Landis' relationship became an open secret in Hollywood and Carole reportedly even spent her final night alive by his side. Carole's death has officially ruled a suicide. Following her passing, many people have speculated about what actually happened on that fateful night.
