Carl Perkins grew up in a low-income household in Tennessee, and he and his brothers learned to pass the time by playing music. As a result of their economic status, they had a lot of exposure to the blues music that African-Americans were making around the time. Carl and his brothers used this influence to develop a rockabilly style not all that dissimilar from the one Elvis Presley was developing around the same time. Sadly, Elvis would make it to the top first, meaning that Carl didn’t get the same credit.
Elvis Presley signed to Sun Records and started gaining momentum, after which point Carl Perkins approached the head of the record label and asked if he could get a contract, as well. Label head Sam Phillips didn’t need another rockabilly artist on his roster, but he couldn’t deny Carl’s talent. He signed Carl with the stipulation that the musician release country music instead of rockabilly.
Elvis Presley moved from Sun Records to RCA in November of 1955, which meant that Sun Records was once again in need of a rockabilly artist. Carl was already on the team, and he had just the song! The release of “Blue Suede Shoes” in 1956 made the musician an overnight sensation. However, a car crash that occurred the same year would call his future into question. Join Facts Verse as we explore how Carl Perkins’ career never recovered after his car crash.
