Did you know that Burt Bacharach confined his daughter to a mental asylum for 10 years because of her undiagnosed Asperger’s syndrome and that she ended up committing suicide at the age of 40? When Burt Bacharach wrote the “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” for the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the composer had a right to feel as if there was a dark cloud looming over him. Just a few years previously, Burt’s wife had given birth to a premature daughter that weighed just less than two pounds. Thankfully, the baby survived and Burt and second wife Angie Dickinson were able to take her home three months later.

While Burt and Angie may have thought they were in for smooth sailing following the scare of the aforementioned traumatic birth, things got worse when the child, named Nikki, began exhibiting some severe behavioral problems. These problems only got worse as she grew older. By the time Nikki was an adult, they didn’t know what to do with her! Because of this, they ended up having her confined to a mental asylum for a period of 10 years.
Towards the end of Nikki’s life, Angie finally figured out what the problem was that had been plaguing her daughter for so many years. After being alive for over three decades, Nikki was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. Sadly, this late diagnosis wouldn’t be enough to turn Nikki’s tragic life around, as the last few years of her life were said to be the most difficult for her. Burt apparently didn’t have much contact with Nikki or Angie in the years leading up to Nikki’s suicide. Nikki’s death came as a surprise to him.
Nikki killed herself by placing a plastic bag over her head. She left a suicide note for her father that the 93-year-old composer has yet to read. According to him, he knows what it says. Join Facts Verse as we explore why Burt Bacharach won’t read the note his daughter left behind.
