Best known for being one-half of the trailblazing American comedy duo Abbott and Costello, Bud Abbott enjoyed a prolific forty-plus-year career as a comic, actor, and producer before passing away at the age of 76 on April 24, 1974.
Bud Abbott and Lou Costello’s deaths were seen as an end of an era of sorts. Through their work in radio, film, and television, they became the most popular comedy team of the 1940s and 50s. They additionally were the highest-paid entertainers in the world during World War II.
To call them iconic is a bit of an understatement. Before Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz became the reigning Queen and King of television comedy, Abbott and Costello rightfully donned those crowns with pride and prowess.

They produced dozens of movies with Universal, had their own highly-celebrated radio show and TV program during the medium’s early days, and delivered a unique brand of comedy that was every bit as simple as it was hilarious.
Sadly, Bud Abbott’s final days alive were quite tragic. Health and cognitive issues plagued him, leading to him having limited mobility. His speech was also severely impaired making it difficult for his loved ones to understand him. To make matters worse, Abbott ended up dying broke and destitute after falling victim to a massive tax scandal.
