FactsVerse Presents: Brenda Lee Was Her Family's Breadwinner at 11 Years Old.
On December 11, 1944, Brenda Mae Tarpley was born; she is better known by her stage name, Brenda Lee. She had a humble beginning and discovered her talents quite early. When the death of her father left the family in desperate financial conditions, little Brenda was there to save the day with her charming voice. During the 1960s, she was rated fourth on the US list, behind only Elvis Presley, the Beatles, and Ray Charles. She had 47 songs with a variety of musical styles, including rockabilly, pop, and country. Her song "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" from 1958 has become a holiday tradition, and her hit from 1960, "I'm Sorry," is equally well-known.

She happens to be one of the earliest performers to have a big contemporary international following, and her nickname, "Little Miss Dynamite," stuck after she recorded the song "Dynamite" at the tender age of 12. It wasn't until 1969 when Lee's version of "Johnny One Time," written by A.L. "Doodle" Owens and Dallas Frazier, made it back onto the charts. The single peaked at #3 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #41 on the Hot 100. Lee received her second nomination for Best Pop Female Vocal Performance for this song at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. Returning to her country music origins helped propel her career in the '70s and '80s.
Aside from enjoying a successful career, Brenda also enjoyed a successful marriage. She married her husband Ronnie Shacklett at the age of 18, and they have been together to this day. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters and three grandchildren. Lee has racked up record sales of over 100 million copies. She has been inducted into three different music halls of fame: Rock and Roll, Country, and Rockabilly. She has also won the Grammy for Lifetime Achievement.
