One of the most important players who made Hee Haw a success was David Akeman, known more popularly as Stringbean. He was a popular country musician and singer and was one of the highlights of Hee Haw. Many fans feel that before his foray into Hee Haw, the show wasn’t as great. After his departure, it lost what made it special.

So why did Stringbean end up leaving Hee Haw? It wasn’t his choice. On the night of November 10, 1973, Stringbean was murdered. His murder sent shocks across the music industry and almost 50 years later we’re still discussing it. But how exactly did it happen? And why did it happen?

We have to start at the beginning. David Akeman was born in Jackson County, Kentucky. He came from a musical background as his father was a banjo player and passed down his gifts to young David who was eager to learn.

While David had to work several odd jobs to make ends meet, growing up as a teenager during the Great Depression, he couldn’t lose sight of the music. He continued to perform and soon became a respected musician and singer in his native Kentucky. It wouldn’t be long until he became known across the United States.

Eventually, David Akeman would adopt the moniker Stringbean and by the time the 1950s rolled around, he was one of the biggest country stars of his generation. He became a major star at the Grand Ole Opry and there was the demand for him to play at different venues across the country.

By the time he was cast on Hee Haw, he was arguably a living legend. He made the show even better and the episodes he was featured on are definitely the best episodes of the series. And then, we lost him and the show just wasn’t the same without him.
