Barbara Eden is a television actress that is best known for her portrayal of the character Jeannie on the classic 1960s sitcom I Dream of Jeannie. Shortly after filming the pilot for that series and just before learning that it was going to be picked up for a full season, Jeannie learned that she was pregnant with her first and only son, Matthew Ansara. Jeannie and her husband, Michael Ansara, had been trying to have a child for seven years before receiving the news.

Although Barbara and Michael were overjoyed at the prospect of finally having a child, Barbara wasn’t sure how the executives in charge of I Dream of Jeannie were going to take the news. As well, she wasn’t sure if she was going to be up for filming the series now that she was pregnant. The executives surprisingly didn’t mind that Barbara had become pregnant and said that they could film the first several episodes around her pregnancy with the use of carefully placed props meant to conceal her large tummy.
Thanks to the open-mindedness of the executives, Barbara somewhat reluctantly performed the titular role on I Dream of Jeannie all the way up until the series’ end in 1970. She and Michael divorced in 1974, and Barbara continued acting. She took Matthew along with her to sets, and Matthew soon began acting himself. Sadly, Matthew developed an addiction to heroin after becoming 18.
Matthew’s addiction to heroin lasted for well over a decade before finally resulting in his early death, at the age of 35. Matthew was found lifeless in his pickup truck, and all those closest to him had believed him to be several years sober.
