Aretha Franklin was born on March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee. Her father was a preacher and her mother was a singer and a piano player. Her upbringing inspired her to become a singer in her own right and it seemed that she was destined for bigger things right from the start.
She learned how to play the piano during her youth and also began to hone in on her singing skills. She began singing gospel songs and became a favorite among her church and other religious circles. But she was destined for an even bigger audience.
Aretha Franklin eventually transitioned to soul music and this was the genre that she mastered. She performed many popular soul songs, most notably ‘Respect’ which became her most well-known song. She also had a notable cameo in The Blues Brothers where she sang the song ‘Think.’
By the time she died, she was arguably one of the most well-known singers in America. Even if you didn’t know her, you knew her music. Yet, her music and her popularity made her a notorious figure in the eyes of the FBI and it’s only now that we’re beginning to learn why.
