But who was Ann Sheridan? Well, before she was Ann Sheridan, she was Clara Lou Sheridan from Denton, Texas. She didn’t come from a Hollywood background at all, but her aspirations were huge. While she initially wanted to become a teacher, she took an interest in dramatics in high school and decided to become an actress.
At the age of 19, her sister submitted Clara Lou’s photos to Paramount studios which were casting for a film. Clara Lou won a screen test, and she was cast in a small role in the film Search For Beauty.
For the next two years, she continued to work regularly with Paramount – mostly appearing in bit parts. Most of the time, she was uncredited, and some of the time, she was credited as Clara Lou Sheridan.
But her fate changed when she realized that simply being a pretty face on the screen wasn’t good enough. She began taking acting classes with Paramount and began to seek supporting and lead roles.
By the mid -1930s, she had improved her acting skills and began appearing in speaking parts in major feature films. It was around this time that she became known as Ann Sheridan.
But how did Ann Sheridan rise from Extra to Oomph? And is she still remembered today? Her life’s journey was a struggle and she really had to persist to get to the top of the film industry!
