Although Angela Lansbury wasn’t born into a show-business family, she did have a famous grandfather. Angela’s grandfather was the leader of London’s Labour Party from 1932 to 1935, over which time period the political figure rose to prominence and earned the respect of the hard-working denizen of the city. Because of this, Angela got the chance to see her grandfather routinely picked out in public and thanked him for his contributions to society before his death in 1940.
According to Angela, her grandfather was killed as a result of his outspoken opinions on the war effort going into World War II. Following the death of her grandfather, Angela’s mother moved her out to New York City. There, Angela began pursuing a career as an actress. By the age of 17, Angela and her mother had moved to Hollywood, and Angela had signed a seven-year contract with MGM. Gaslight was released in 1944, and Angela’s performance proved her big break.
In the many years between her breakout turn in Gaslight and her recent death, Angela Lansbury never stopped working. After working in Hollywood for two decades, she found her passion resided on the Broadway stage. In her 90s, Angela could be seen performing on Broadway in the play The Chalk Garden.
