Andre always wanted to be a wrestler but never dreamed of being famous. He was a sensitive man who struggled to forget times when children on the street would mock him.
He had trouble traveling from place to place since he was a boy and began growing at an alarming pace. Samuel Beckett had to take him to school in his van because traditional school buses were too small. The problem continued as he became too large for cabs.
Andre never got drunk but loved to go out drinking. He was known to down an entire pitcher of alcohol in one sitting and treat his police escort to a beer.
His time filming The Princess Bride, a movie that made him even more famous, spawned plenty of other memorable moments. Cary Ewles who played Westley remembers him speeding around the set on an ATV, falling asleep in the middle of a hotel and being blocked off by a velvet rope, and going barhopping to celebrate the film’s release.
Andre rarely fought with anyone outside of the ring. He became close with Vince McMahon and his daughter, took several younger wrestlers under his wing, and opened the door for other wrestlers like Dwayne The Rock Johnson to pursue a movie career. Despite this, he also had famous feuds with Macho Man Randy Savage and The Ultimate Warrior, as well as a rivalry with Hulk Hogan that was eventually squashed.
