This came in spite of the fact that the two were both married to other people, with Jean being towards the end of her marriage to second husband Romain Gary and Clint Eastwood having just recently had his first child with first wife Maggie Johnson. Clint had become notorious for being unfaithful to his wife, specifically with his female costars. However, these relationships rarely lasted past filming.

Jean Seberg apparently didn’t know that Clint Eastwood’s on-set romances didn’t typically last. When Clint romanced her, she fell head over heels in love with her male costar and subsequently filed for divorce from her second husband. When Clint began acting like he didn’t know her after Paint Your Wagon was done filming, Jean claimed to have been traumatized. Other factors in the actress’s personal life seemed to be conspiring against her, and it was later proved that they actually were.
