Peterson began acting as a child and landed guest spots on popular TV shows like Father Murphy and Silver Spoons. She also appeared in more than 50 TV commercials. She won her first starring role in the feature film Explorers, opposite River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke. She also starred in the critically acclaimed miniseries A Year in the Life, for which she won a Young Artist Award.
But her breakthrough role came in 1987 when she played Cindy Mancini, the popular girl who falls for the nerdy boy played by Patrick Dempsey, in Can't Buy Me Love.
But behind her success and fame, Peterson was hiding a dark secret. In 2015, her family revealed that she was sexually assaulted at age 15 by a man twice her age and had not disclosed it at the time. The trauma of the assault affected her deeply and led her to seek solace in drugs and alcohol. She also struggled with an eating disorder and body image issues.
After her career began to decline, Peterson eventually became disillusioned with Hollywood and returned to her hometown of Greeley, Colorado, where she graduated from high school. But her personal problems continued to haunt her. She developed a drug addiction that led to several arrests and convictions for possession, assault, and DUI. She also had two failed marriages and two children. She suffered from bipolar disorder, depression, and insomnia. She tried to get sober and rebuild her life, but she never managed to overcome her demons.
Peterson died on July 3, 2015, just five days before her 44th birthday. Her cause of death was later revealed to be an accidental overdose of morphine and other drugs. It was revealed that she had been prescribed painkillers after a hysterectomy and had obtained morphine illegally.
Peterson's legacy is that of a talented and beautiful actress who had a bright future ahead of her, but whose life was cut short by a tragic accident. She will always be remembered for her iconic role as Cindy Mancini in Can't Buy Me Love, a film that touched the hearts of millions of people.
