The band's original lineup included lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitar player Allen Collins, guitar player Gary Rossington, bass player Leon Wilkeson, drummer Bob Burns, and keyboard player Billy Powell. Sadly, Burns passed away in a car accident in 2015, while Wilkeson died of natural causes in 2001. Powell died of a heart attack in 2009.
In 1977, Lynyrd Skynyrd suffered a devastating loss when a plane crash took the lives of Van Zant, Collins, and backup vocalist Cassie Gaines. The crash also injured several other members of the band and crew.
Van Zant was the charismatic frontman of the band and wrote many of their most memorable songs. Collins was a talented guitarist who co-wrote some of the band's biggest hits. Both were just 29 years old at the time of their deaths. Gaines was the younger sister of backup vocalist and keyboardist Steve Gaines, who had recently joined the band.
Lynyrd Skynyrd has paid tribute to their fallen comrades in various ways over the years, including dedicating songs to them and releasing a live album recorded just days before the tragic plane crash. The legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd and the memories of those who have passed away continue to live on through their music and the fans who love them.
Sadly, in March 2023, Lynyrd Skynyrd lost Gary Rossington who has been with the band since the early days. Lynyrd Skynyrd goes on but it's certainly a sad loss that so many of the original members have left us. But as we mourn their passing, let’s also remember their great lives.
