McQueen was one of Hollywood's biggest box-office draws in the late 1960s, and in 1974 he became the highest-paid cinema star in the world. A few of McQueen's most memorable roles include his turns in The Great Escape, The Cincinnati Kid, The Magnificent Seven, and The Towering Inferno.
Actress Ali MacGraw, best remembered for her role as Jenny in 1970s Love Story, was married to famed Hollywood producer Robert Evans prior to the meeting and fell madly in love with her co-star Steve McQueen on the set of the 1971 film The Getaway.
What started off as just another impassioned Hollywood affair eventually evolved into a full-fledged romance. MacGraw ended up leaving Evans and married McQueen in 1973. However, their relationship soon soured and in 1977, MacGraw and McQueen went their separate ways.
A year later, Steven was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma – a kind of cancer often associated with asbestos exposure. McQueen died of a heart attack on the seventh of November, 1980, just hours after having surgery to remove numerous metastasized tumors in his neck. He was just 50 years old when he passed away.
