He managed to carve out an impressive and legendary career as a leading man in films, despite growing up in poverty and in a troubled home. Ladd was known as a convincing and suave actor who often played the villain in detective movies. And he managed to become a major star and leading man, despite not technically playing the classic leading men. Sadly, however, his career took a downturn in the late 1950s and early 1960s. But the time he was in his late 40s, he had been in a string of box office flops, and he was getting fewer and fewer job offers.
He also suffered from a litany of emotional issues and confidence problems, and these were only worsened by his tanking career. Then in 1962, he was involved in a bizarre accident. He ended up with a self-inflicted gunshot through his torso, something he claimed was an accident. But it was speculated by many that he’d tried to take his life. A similar thing happened two years later, but this time, it cost him his life. He overdosed on a mix of alcohol, drugs, and sleeping pills. Yet again it was presumed he’d attempted suicide, but the official autopsy didn’t back this theory up.
Regardless, it was a sad ending to a life and career with a ton of ups and downs.
