Did you know that the head of NBC thought that competing ABC programs like Charlie’s Angels and Three’s Company were no better than pornography at the time of their airing and that those shows and others like them became known to the public during the 1970s as jiggle TV? By the 1970s, television had been around for long enough that ratings had begun to dwindle for traditional sitcoms, with the audience becoming more open-minded and accepting increasingly adult-oriented content. Amidst the sexual revolution that had begun in the previous decade, television started showing off quite a bit more cleavage during the 1970s in order to get the attention of audiences. One of the networks most notorious for using boobs to draw in viewers was CBS, and the head of competing for network NBC coined the derogatory term “jiggle TV” to describe the CBS network’s content.

Some of the most popular examples of jiggle TV during the 1970s included Charlie’s Angels, Three’s Company, Logan’s Run, Wonder Woman, and The Love Boat. Charlie’s Angels revolved around three female spies who for some reason never wore bras, while Three’s Company was a much more traditional comedy that took full advantage of the beautiful Suzanne Somers by placing her in different revealing costumes in each episode. Meanwhile, the television audience could easily view the curves of Linda Hamilton’s body while she was portraying the titular character on Wonder Woman thanks to the character’s tight costume.

Finally, The Love Boat featured a rotating cast of bikini-clad actresses alongside its popular Hollywood guest stars. Join Fact Verse as we explore how actresses went braless for these jiggle TV shows and audiences loved it.
