Actors Who Refuse to Watch Their Own Movies

If you were an actor, would you watch your finished films? The answer is a firm “no” for many of the biggest names in Hollywood for many reasons. Some of them only watch one of their performances before swearing to never see another. Adam Driver didn’t like himself in the pilot of the HBO show The Girls. Constance Wu has only ever seen herself in Crazy Rich Asians.

Other actors get too overcome by anxiety when they watch themselves on screen. It sends Reese Witherspoon into a self-hate spiral. Not being able to change any mistakes in their performances is also too much for actors like Joaquin Phoenix and Julianne Moore.

A film screen can also be like a giant mirror that blows up any unflattering features you have. It’s enough to make sex symbols like Javier Bodem consumed with their physical imperfections.
Other actors feel like watching completed movies is like staying in the past. Meryl Streep has never seen one of her films more than once. Al Pacino remembers but refuses to dwell on his former roles. Johnny Depp says it’s none of his business what happens to a film when he’s done acting in it. A few actors only watched their performances when they were forced to. Andrew Garfield got pushed to see The Social Network, and Adam Driver hid in the green room during the screening of BlackKlansman.

Even starring in a massive hit franchise isn’t always enough to convince actors to watch themselves. This is true of Harrison Ford, aka Indiana Jones, and Rupert Grint, aka Ron Weasley.
