Tastes are personal, and some actors simply don’t like the characters they’re asked to play. Christopher Plummer found Captain von Trapp incredibly boring, Marlon Brando hated everything about Stanley Kowalski, and Robert Pattinson spoke about his hatred for Edward Cullen on several occasions.
Typecasting is a common phenomenon that can ruin careers. Faye Dunaway’s performance as Joan Crawford was so layered yet despicable that it labeled her as a female villain go-to for the rest of her career. George Reeves played Superman for so long that he eventually felt that he’d rather die than do it again.
Certain actors can be convinced to play a character they hate if they’re paid enough money. Sean Connery never liked James Bond but kept stepping into his shiny shoes because he earned plenty of money for doing so. Future actors who took on the character continued the trend.
Taking on a famous character in a major franchise can also be too much for some. Carrie Fisher never wanted a role as large and well-known as Princess Leia, and it played a part in the dark path she traveled down near the end of her life.
Almost every actor or actress has at least one role they regret, but it may not always be the one you expect. Knowing the parts of their career they wish they could erase makes you feel closer to them, but the unfortunate fact is that the success of the films they hate means they won’t ever be able to shake their association with the roles they most regret agreeing to.
