The iconic character of Batman was created in 1939, and he is still one of the most popular characters in the media today. Many different actors have portrayed the character on the screen, and each one of these actors has had a good reason to turn their back on the character when they were done. The first time that the character of Batman was brought onto the screen was the 1943 serial simply titled Batman. The serial featured Lewis Wilson as the titular character, though he later quit the entertainment industry to start a lucrative career working for General Foods in order to support this family.

After the 1943 Batman serial, the character’s next appearance in the media was the 1949 follow-up serial Batman and Robin. This serial replaced Lewis Wilson with B-movie actor Robert Lowery. Like Lewis before him, Robert only portrayed the character of Batman for one single serial before later being replaced. After the 1949 serial, Batman wasn’t brought back onto the screen until 1966, with the popular series once again known simply as Batman. The series featured Adam West, who reprised the role of Batman multiple times in other capacities before his death.

The 1966 Batman series damaged the character’s reputation with its overly comedic tone. Because of this, Batman’s popularity suffered throughout the 1970s. 1989’s Batman, directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton, represented a new start for the character on the big screen. The film was a big success, and Batman has been seen in another film every few years since, despite the fact that it hasn’t always been the same actor that’s playing him. Besides Michael Keaton, other actors that have portrayed Batman on the big screen include George Clooney, Ben Affleck, and Christian Bale.
