Sandra was born a beautiful and intelligent but reclusive child. She never wanted to be an actress or model, but her domineering stage mother convinced her to start her career at an early age.
She experienced tragedy before she was even a teenager after suffering sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather. Her career also began when she was young with a modeling job at the age of 8.
Sandra's acting talents weren't discovered until 1957, when she made her film debut in Until They Sail. That initial role led her to earn several parts as innocent ingenue and made her a teen idol.
Sandra met Bobby Darin just when her career was starting to slow down in 1960. They were quickly married and had a rocky but passionate relationship until they were divorced in 1966. They stayed friends until his early death.
Sandra was crushed by the loss of her only love and took on several unhealthy habits. Her lifelong eating disorder became worse and she turned to pills and alcohol to dull the pain of her low self-esteem. Her son Dodd did everything he could to help her, but she died in 2005 after years of dialysis failed to repair the damage she’d done to her kidneys.
Sandra Dee has been immortalized both by her TV and film appearances and the mocking tune Look at Me I’m Sandra Dee from the teen musical Grease. She seemed to be the one star who had everything together, but her beautiful appearance and innocent image masked the pain she held inside.
