Lama on the loose: Furry fugitive recaptured by Ontario Police

It's not every day the cops are called to rescue a runaway lama but that's the situation law enforcement faced in Ontario, Canada, on Sunday November 19.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Ministry of Transportation (MTO) teamed up to rescue the furry fugitive that had ventured onto the northbound lanes of Highway 400 in York Region.

Personnel from the OPP Highway Safety Division and the MTO swiftly responded to the highway escapade, recapturing the animal and returning it to its owner.

Amusingly, police initially misidentified the woolly fugitive as an alpaca when they shared images of the capture on social media.

"'See alpacas go slow' doesn't have the same ring as 'see snow go slow,'" quipped OPP officials, referring to a winter road safety motto.

They reminded motorists to exercise caution when encountering unexpected guests on the highway.
