Dogs are loyal and trainable, making them one of the most common types of famous animals. Toto of the Wizard of Oz may be one of the most famous. Old Yeller, Lassie, and Rin Tin Tin were also staples of classic films. Many of them were so popular that their children took up the mantle when they died. Horses have also been a staple of Hollywood’s animal star reservoir. Where would Roy Rodgers be without Trigger or Mr. Ed without its talking star?
A few famous film animals entertained us from the water. There's Keiko who starred in the Free Willy series and the 6 female dolphins who shared the role of Flipper, just to name a few. Monkeys may be known for their mischievous behavior, but plenty of them became famous with a bit of proper training. There’s Crystal the Capuchin who appeared in Hangover II, Katie from the hit sitcom Friends, and Manis who played the orangutang in Clint Eastwood’s Every Which Way but Loose.
Other films found ways to work with animals that may not seem trainable. 58 piglets joined up to create the hit film, Babe. Bart the Bear was a beloved star who racked up an impressive list of credits. Many of these animals eventually retired to a life of luxury and died at a ripe old age. A few were taken from this world after a battle with a serious illness, but they live on thanks to their excellent performances.
