Young Burt didn’t aspire to be a Hollywood star, but a circus performer. During his young adulthood, Burt dropped out of school with his friends and they started performing as acrobats at the circus. Burt was taller than the average gymnast, but he still found moderate success in the profession. Sadly, an injury sustained on the job during his 20s put an end to his acrobatic career in the circus.
After having to give up his days in the circus, Burt worked for a time as a USO performer. Around this time, someone approached Burt and offered him a role on Broadway. Unsure about his future, Burt took the job. He ended up enjoying acting, and made his Hollywood debut in 1946, at the age of 33. That debut was in The Killers, and Burt was a big star by the time the 1950s rolled around.
As compared to many of his contemporaries, Burt liked to consider his own personal beliefs when choosing projects. He turned down the lead role in Ben-Hur because he didn’t like the film’s religious themes. He started his own production company so he could be in charge of his own projects, and was always outspoken about his liberal beliefs. Although Burt was married three times, he was allegedly a bisexual swinger who liked to party with such fellow Hollywood stars as Rock Hudson.
